(60 Minutes)
Category: Theatre/Video

Written & Performed by Emma Palzere-Rae (Connecticut)
Directed by Albert Cremin

Set on the centennial of the passing of the 19th Amendment, The Woodhull Project explores how Victoria Woodhull, US presidential candidate of 1872, would perceive our progress with politics and women's rights. Victoria Woodhull (1838-1927) returns to this life (she was a clairvoyant after all) as a guest lecturer at virtual suffrage celebration. Known as a Free Lover, Victoria was also the first woman to speak before Congress, the first woman to open a stock brokerage firm, the first woman to publish a newspaper, the first woman to run for President — and the first woman arrested under the Comstock law. Through dialogue with the audience and flashbacks of her extraordinary and scandalous life, we learn about this woman who was written out of history. This event features a screening of Palzere-Rae's performance for the Virtual Celebration of the 19th Amendment Centennial followed by a discussion.

Made possible with support from the CT Department of Economic and Community Development/Office of the Arts and its Artists Respond relief funding.
